We searched everywhere. And somehow, in a world full of “outdoor” brands, we couldn’t find what we actually wanted: a 100% cotton hoodie that looked good, felt good, and wasn’t made from petroleum. So we made it ourselves.
Most Hoodies Are Made of Plastic. Literally.
Not metaphorically. The “fleece” in most hoodies — including expensive ones from big outdoor brands — is polyester. A petroleum-derived synthetic fiber. A plastic. Most people have no idea they’re wearing it against their skin all day.
The outdoor industry defaulted to synthetic fabrics because they’re cheap to produce. Not because they feel better. Not because they’re better for you.

What Synthetic Fabric Is Doing to Your Body
A growing body of peer-reviewed research is finding synthetic microfibers — shed from polyester clothing during wear and washing — accumulating inside the human body.
What the research has found
• A single polyester garment sheds up to 6 million microfibers per wash (NIH/PMC, 2025)
• Microplastic particles found in human lung tissue, blood, and the placenta
• A 2024 study found microplastic concentrations in human brain tissue rising measurably from 2016 to 2024
• Synthetic fabric additives — flame retardants, dyes, plasticizers — leach into skin and bloodstream, acting as endocrine disruptors
• Synthetic textiles now account for 13% of all global plastic pollution (Pew, 2026)
THE BOTTOM LINE Recycled polyester is still polyester. It still sheds. It’s an environmental rebrand of the same material — not a health solution.
Why Cotton Is Different
Cotton is a natural plant fiber. It breathes, softens with age, and doesn’t shed synthetic microparticles into your washing machine, waterways, or lungs. Heavyweight cotton — the 12–14oz ring-spun fleece we use — gets better with every wash. Polyester pills, thins, and gives up.
What cotton does that synthetics don’t
• Breathes naturally — no trapped heat or odor
• Gets softer with every wash, not thinner and pilled
• No microplastic shedding into water or air
• No petroleum-based chemical additives against your skin
• Biodegrades — doesn’t persist in the environment for centuries
The Problem: Nobody Was Making It
We looked at every brand before we launched. North Face, Patagonia, Arc’teryx — great gear, mostly synthetic, built for performance. The casual outdoor lifestyle space — the hoodie for the farmers market, the fire, the drive to the trailhead — was abandoned to fast fashion. Cheap polyester with a mountain graphic on it.
That’s the gap. That’s why BOURDØNNÉ exists.
